Waiting longer than expected for therapy: what to do

Waiting estimates can change, and an assessment list may be separate from a treatment list. A calm check-in can confirm that your referral is active and help you understand the next stage.

Check the basics

  • Confirm that the service has your current phone number, email and address.
  • Ask whether you are waiting for assessment or treatment and whether there is another wait after assessment.
  • Ask for your current status, an updated estimate and how often you should check in.
  • Ask what happens if you miss a call and what number may appear on your phone.

Ask about alternatives

  • Ask about cancellation appointments, groups, workshops, guided self-help or remote appointments.
  • Ask whether another local service or self-referral route may be suitable.
  • Check Hub of Hope, local Mind services, charities, employers, unions, colleges or universities for interim support.

Keep the plan live

  • Update your GP when symptoms or daily functioning change.
  • Keep a short record of contact dates and advice.
  • Do not wait for a routine appointment if you need urgent help.
Keep it manageable

You do not have to complete every step today. Choose the smallest useful action, such as writing one sentence, saving one number or asking one person to sit with you while you call.
