Know what may be useful later
For an adult assessment, old school reports or previous assessments can sometimes help, as can information from someone who knew you as a child. For a child, school or nursery information may be relevant.
Ask about support while waiting
NHS guidance recommends asking a GP or education professional what support is available while waiting. Needs at work, school or in healthcare may be addressed separately from the diagnostic process.
England: ask about choice
In England, NHS guidance says you may be able to choose which NHS service carries out an autism assessment and potentially find a provider with a shorter wait. Eligibility and routes vary, so discuss the current options with your GP.
Write down the things you most want remembered. You can read from your notes, show them to the clinician, or use the free appointment-prep tool to put them in order.
